Nydia Velázquez

NY-7 (D)
Congressmember Velázquez was first elected to Congress in 1992, making history as the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She is the Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee and a senior member of the Financial Services Committee. She has sponsored and co-sponsored a variety of legislation throughout her time in Congress. Recognized for her national influence in politics, business, and support of minorities, Congressmember Velázquez was honored as the inaugural "Woman of the Year" by Hispanic Business Magazine.
How does Nydia align with Project 100's values?
  • Economic Opportunity: Congressmember Velázquez believes in equal pay for equal work. She supports increased federal funding for schools, affordable education, and job training for displaced workers. Believing that no one working fulltime should live in poverty, she supports raising minimum wage to a livable wage. She supports small businesses and investments in infrastructure and mass transit to create jobs.
  • Equal Treatment Under the Law: Congressmember Velázquez is a strong supporter of the Dream Act. She advocates for the protections of all immigrants and supports common sense immigration reform that does not separate families.
  • Healthy People & Communities: Congressmember Velázquez is unwaiveringly pro-choice and strongly supports increased funding for women’s health services. She also supports legislation for improved child care and family leave policies. An advocate for the environment, she champions cleaner energy and has a 100% vote rating from the New York State League of Conservation Voters.
