First joining the United States House of Representatives in 1989, Congressmember Lowey is currently serving her 15th term and is the first woman to serve as Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee. Her incumbency includes many legislative accomplishments, with Congressional Quarterly naming her one of the 50 Most Effective Members of Congress. She fights for educational opportunity, health care quality and research, stricter public safety laws, environmental protection, women's issues, and national security. Congressmember Lowey was the first woman to represent New York's 18th District, and the first Democratic woman to represent New York's 17th District.
