Jennifer Lewis

VA-6 (D)
Current office holder: Bob Goodlatte (R)
Jennifer is a mental health worker, community advocate, and leader in the fight against the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. She is running for Congress because for far too long, the 6th district has been neglected by both political parties in different ways. She believes the interests of poor and working people are not represented among the political elite, and we need citizens of all political persuasions to stand up and demand actual representation.
How does Jennifer align with Project 100's values?
  • Economic Opportunity: Jennifer believes workers must be paid a living wage that makes sure that full-time workers don't live in poverty. She supports raising the minimum wage to $15/hour. In order to reduce pay discrepancies between men and women, she supports the Paycheck Fairness Act. She believes creating a fair economy means taking on the big banks who brought our system down. She supports a 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act to separate commercial banking from the risk and unpredictability of investment banking. She supports breaking up the big banks and fortifying the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Dodd-Frank measures. She supports increased funding for public education. She doesn't just want to reduce interest rates on student loans - she wants to make public college and university tuition-free.
  • Equal Treatment Under the Law: Jennifer believes that all citizens of the 6th - regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation - should be treated fairly and equally under the law. She supports The Equality Act, which provides non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ people in education, credit, housing, employment, jury duty, public services, and federally funded programs. She supports a path to citizenship for DREAMers as well as expanding DACA and DAPA to further help parents of DREAMers, parents of legal permanent residents, and parents of citizens. She believes a nation founded by immigrants cannot justify breaking up law-abiding families. She believes the right to vote is fundamental to democracy, but across the country, we see continued attempts to disenfranchise Americans. She supports the Voting Rights Advancement Act, which restores the power of the Voting Rights Act and is in favor of making Election Day a federal holiday aimed at increasing voter participation. She supports widespread criminal justice reform starting with reducing mandatory minimums for non-violent offenders, eliminating for-profit prisons, and emphasizing treatment for people suffering from addiction and mental illness.
  • Healthy People & Communities: Jennifer believes healthcare is ahuman right and it's our moral obligation to create a nation in which nobody dies - or goes bankrupt- because they lack insurance. The ACA was a start, but the insurance and pharmaceutical companies had too much influence over policy. She supports establishing a national health insurance system in line with the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act. Jennifer believes it's time to set aside partisan politics and NRA-funded talking points in order to embrace gun safety measurse for the sake of our children. She supports strengthening and expanding background checks, ending the sale of bump stocks, raising the minimum purchase age for AR-15s to 21, and prohibiting the sale, manufacture, and possession of semi-automatic assault weapons. She supports increased funding for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation from opioid addiction. In terms of the enviroment, she believes our priority should be green energy infrastructure and jobs, and she opposes both the proposed Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipelines.
