Donna Shalala

FL-27 (D)
Current office holder: Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R)
Donna E. Shalala has spent her life fighting to improve others' lives. The former president of the University of Miami, she has advocated tirelessly for women’s rights, civil rights, increased access to health care, better education and schools and a clean, sustainable environment. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) where she became the longest serving HHS Secretary in U.S. history. Donna has lived in Pinecrest and Coral Gables for 17 years. She is running for the open seat vacated by Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and will face Republican Maria Salazar in November.
How does Donna align with Project 100's values?
  • Economic Opportunity: Secretary Shalala will fight for people, not for tax cuts for the wealthy. She will support strategic investments that include an education system that prepares our children for the jobs and industries of the future; building a strong local infrastructure of roads, bridges, mass transit options, airports and seaports that allows the movement of people and goods throughout our region; and investments in a social safety net that allows everyone to enjoy a decent minimum standard of living.
  • Equal Treatment Under the Law: Secretary Shalala will work to close the gender pay gap. The daughter of immigrants, Donna Shalala will work to mend our immigration system so that America can remain a beacon of hope to the world. She will defend DACA and protect DREAMers.
  • Healthy People & Communities: As the longest-serving Secretary of Health and Human Services in American history, Donna Shalala is one of America’s foremost experts on health care. To continue working towards universal, high-quality, affordable health care for Floridians and all Americans, she will support a “Medicare Option for All”. Secretary Shalala believes climate change is the biggest planetary challenge we face currently and wants the US to once again assume a position of leadership in an international, coordinated response to global warming. She will defend women’s reproductive freedom and fight for legislation that protects and assists victims of sexual harassment, rape, and domestic abuse. She will work for immediate action on gun violence. In addition to banning assault weapons, she believes in expanding background checks by closing the gun show, internet sales, and “Charleston” loopholes, and increasing access to mental health services.
